- On Friday, May 2, the Florida legislature delivered a great victory to Florida’s low-income families by passing SB/HB 653, which will increase the annual cap on the Step Up For Students Corporate Tax Credit (CTC) scholarship program by $30 million. This expansion will allow us to serve 6,000 additional children, raising the number of scholarships distributed annually to 26,000 statewide. We wish to thank the Florida legislature for their incredible leadership in passing this bill, especially the bill sponsors Representative Trey Traviesa (R-Tampa) and Senator Don Gaetz (R-Niceville).
The overwhelmingly bipartisan vote included a majority of the Legislative Black Caucus (combined House and Senate), the entire Hispanic Caucus (same), and almost 40 percent of all House Democrats. This clearly demonstrates that parental choice for low-income families is rapidly becoming a universal cause.
We also wish to thank our corporate donors who have contributed over $385 million since 2002. Our heartfelt appreciation goes to those who support Step Up For Students in so many ways. You are giving children the chance to receive the educational tools for a promising future. Your continued support will ensure the success of these children, as well as the thousands of others who desperately need educational opportunities.
